Madison Ave Christian Church Marks 10 Years for Homeless Feeding Program

Over 150,000 meals served to homeless and poor

It began with an idea in 2004 to take the Sunday morning men’s breakfast and open it up to the poor and needy in the community.  This summer, Madison Avenue Christian Church is marking the 10th anniversary of its popular community meal program. Dedicated church members and hundreds of community volunteers serve on average, 26,000 hot meals a year, and over 150,000 have been served since the beginning of the program.

“Throughout the ten years, we have seen the feeding program evolve from mostly adult men to more families, single mothers with children and the elderly,” said Senior Minister Chinna Simon.  “So many working families have trouble covering their expenses and need help with meals and putting food on the table. We are here to lend a hand, serve a hot meal and a cup of coffee, and show them that someone cares.”

The community meal program was founded by Madison Avenue Christian Elder Emeritus Karl Kepler who passed away in July. “Karl was such an important part of the meal program and he will be greatly missed,” added Pastor Simon.

Teams of volunteers including other church groups prepare and serve approximately 200 guests at the community meals on Monday and Wednesday evening. Because of limited space, In order to accommodate the growing crowds, the church rotates people in once tables open up.  Members and friends of Madison Avenue Christian Church partners with First Christian Church on Fifth Street to provide meals on Saturday evenings. Additional volunteers are always needed; contact Madison Avenue Christian Church at 859-261-0226.
